Instagram Takeover.

WEEK #1

Instagram takeover was our first assignment, focused around Instagram being used as a new medium of publishing artwork and how easy it can be to become a name in the photography world by simply taking pictures of what you see while walking around.
A sort of making art of the everyday.

And to be completely honest with you, I’m not even that sure how to use Instagram, still don’t really. But ill do my best to show off some good examples then my own as reference for this page.

Darryll Jones (@darrylljones)

Darryll Jones, one of the more interesting posters on Instagram, uses toys, props, and a little of timing and a little editing to create “moving pictures” I’d like to say. He has a process of setting the toys how he likes and famously uses fire crackers and water to give the photos a bit of excitement to them, plus a wondaful use of lighting to make these props look bigger or more realistic than they actually are.

Now, with my “Instagram Take Over” We were given 9 words to work off of, which will be listed with the photos and a brief explanation of thought process.

Identity.
I’ll be completely honest, this assignment took place during pride week at my university and when I think of identity, I obviously think of self and how we view it.
Gender and Sexuality are a perfect way to explore this, so seeing the flags raised high and nice little “GOOD TO SEE YOU!” right under just kind of clicked for me. Sadly not all photos have a wonderous deep meaning to them.

Difference.
This one was actually quite fun, and to be honest a little embarrassing when making it. But I guess there is a saying “no pain, no gain”.
So for this I simply picked 2 different plants, a thorny branch and a high contrast flower, and simply tied one around the other on a metal pole.
I genuinely do love this one and it makes me quite proud.

Performance.
Once again, I’m sorry but my thought process is not insanely high when taking pictures.
For this piece, I saw a letter box, as you can see, and wondered how it all works, its really impressive when you really think about it, added by the extra info of exact times and days imprinted onto the letter box. Somehow is just kind of screamed “human ingenuity” to me, thus, performance of information though non internet means. I know, very exiting.

Mono.
So, in our Uni, all things considered, it isn’t very tall, in our section at least. Most of the building are maybe 3 floors at most, except for this one extremely tall spire that is part of a church smack dab in the middle of the Uni. It sort of just looms there, over everything. One large entity, mono, solo, a perfect representation of a sol powerful object.

Reflection.
My process behind this, was a reflection on whats around you. I took a close up of a common bush next to a walkway I pass everyday. But with some simple tricks it kinda turned it self into an entire scene, a whole world inside a little area.
Not to mention, and to my own praise, its quite a good looking picture.
So, I guess, yeah, be aware of the small things around you.

Shadow.
There rally isn’t a single thought process to this one. Trees make shadows.
Sorry about that.

Mistake.
This one doesn’t really make any sense without explanation, whether that makes it bad or good, I’m not too sure.
So, there flowers pictured, are amazingly beautiful in full colour, an amazing purple with super vibrant petal in all. Now how can this be a mistake? Removing that colour, taking away that glorious luster.

Portrait.
So this one is a little on the personal side, but, once i moved to England and started Uni, it was a completely new experience for me, a little too new. I get anxious pretty easily and alcohol is quite a close friend even before the move. So obviously people turn to close friends, but it also may be a little toxic.
Anyways I guess there is some symbolism here, of alcohol being a portrait of me.

Beauty.
By far my favourite photo of this collection, even being put into a “pop up exabit” in that very lesson. The main focus of the photo is to find beauty in everything, even on cloudy day in the middle of a road. But then again, beauty is subjective, isn’t it?
