Who is this?

An old sailor past his glory days, he is kind of a… blunt person, but genuinely enjoyable to be around. He spends his days trading beers for stories at a beach bar he spend his time at. Everyone knows him as “9” on the account of his missing finger. He tells stories to random passers by and almost seems like there is no end of them, are they made up to get his free beer? Or are they just exgurations. Who knows. He doesn’t really live a very exiting life anymore, but he is more than happy with it.

Now, I hate to ruin the fun, but this is actually one of many photos of homeless people by Lee Jeffries and Julia Bradbury in the UK and Europe titled “Lost Angels”

What is going on?

Allen Braxin, a new recruit on the SS.Fellbell, a short travel carry vessel that ships charcoal from a factory on a remote island and transports it to a adjacent island. While departing from the dock to collect more charcoal, Allen, enjoying his lunch, is greeted by a small hungry friend.

Why?

One day, the Sun fell out of the sky, splitting into 10 parts and scattering across the world and plunging the world in darkness, the only illumination coming from the sun which was now, while still massive, far smaller than it once was.
The world was put into a panic. Many thinking this was the end of the world. Others thinking this was gods plan, the final rapture.
Leaving there to be two groups, those holding their loved ones waiting for the end, and those running to the light, like moths to the flame.

I wonder which I would be. Honestly, not my best story of the 3, but certainly my most fantastical and interesting. Maybe ill leave it to someone far more talented then me to do it.

1. Images in conversation with each other.

Exactly what it says, can you guess this? I sure didn’t and to be completely honest, I laughed way too much when I found out the answer. Are you ready?

2. Diptych.

This is, quite simply, two art to represent one whole.

Mainly used by the Eastern Orthodox with religious scenes and subjects in a closeable book type stand.

3. The book spread.

These are a collection of pictures put together seemingly at random and put into a book.

Larry Sultan (Shown) – “Pictures of Home”
and Marten Lange‘s book are the two examples we were given for this subject.
as seen, these two pictures are seemly unrelated and its up to the reader… er… looker? to figure out what context can be between these two photos.

4. Starting points

* A common colour thread
* Aesthetic
* Similar shapes (Form)
* Thematic connection (Poetic)
* Time
* Juxtaposition (Surreal)

Putting two or more pictures together that have certain qualities in common. (Listen above).

5. Conflation

Merging 2+ pictures, texts, etc. over each other into one coherent picture.

This is done using polaroid cameras and exposing the film inside to light two different times, even three if you are skilled enough.
This will imprint both of your photos on the film and when you decided that was enough and you have a steady hand you will have both pictures overlapped over one another.

6. Reflecting.

This one I had a harder time completely understanding. But as far as I can tell Reflection does not mean the literal sense, but more of a symbolic sense, where both pictures are a reflection of each other. I.e. Colour similarities, shape similarities, theme similarities. (not necessarily opposites as shown in the example picture.)
